Toadally Magical Birthday

Today’s card was a fun challenge from Craft Roulette, The Ultimate Card Making Challenge, on youtube by Mary Gunn Funn. If you’ve never been a part of Craft Roulette, I seriously encourage you to check it out. I only discovered it a few months ago but I am loving it! She spins a wheel to find out what parameters she needs to use to create a card. You can create along with her and submit your card to the website. It’s a lot of fun and what I really love about it is that it helps me to creatively step out of the box and use things in card making that I wouldn’t always think to use.

This particular card is from episode 168. The parameters were that it had to be a kid’s card, citrus orchard colors, the element had to be a spring scene, and it had to include metallic or foil.

I chose to create a kid’s birthday card. My citrus orchard colors are yellow, green, and sky blue. My spring scene is a frog as we often have frogs in our yard in the spring. My metallic or foil element is a crown and stars colored in with a metallic gold pen.

To make the A2 card base (4 ¼ x 5 ½ inch) I used Recollections white 110lb cardstock. Around the edges of the front of the card base, I took my Tim Holtz Distress Oxide ink in the Squeezed Lemonade color and swinked (swiped ink) all the edges so I would have a nice bright yellow outline for my card.

For the card front, I cut a piece of white cardstock to 4 x 5 ¼ inches. I stamped a princess with a crown and a frog onto the bottom of the card front using VersaFine Clair Nocturne ink and embossed using Recollections clear embossing powder. For the sentiment, I stamped and embossed ‘Have a toadally magical birthday’ using the same ink and embossing powder.

To color the princess, I used a mixture of pens and ink. For her skin, I used Artist’s Loft dual tip art markers – portrait colors #419. For her hair I used #736 from the same marker pack. For the blue part of her dress, I used a blue Gelly Roll Moonlight pen. The yellow part of her dress is done in the Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Squeezed Lemonade. I used a finger dauber to ink that part of the dress up while also using mint tape to mask off her hands, arms and edges of the dress.

I also used mint tape to mask around the frog and I colored it in with Tim Holtz Distress Oxide ink in the Twisted Citron color. I left the eyes white.

I decided I wanted a sky scene to cover the background of the card front. I have a cloud template that I had previously cut from card stock. I used this template to place at random spots all over the card front while ink blending Tim Holtz Distress Oxide ink in the Tumbled Glass color using a finger dauber. I had created a mask of my princess and frog and covered those while I created the sky so they wouldn’t get any blue ink on them.

Next, I decided to add a bunch of small stars using a stamp and VersaFine Clair Nocturne ink and Recollections clear embossing powder. I colored the stars in using a Pentel Slicci metallic gold pen. I like the effect it gave.

All but one of the stamps I used on this card were from the Forever In Time magical princess stamp set. The ‘birthday’ stamp was from the Close to my Heart Dandelion Wishes stamp set.

To complete the card, I adhered the card front to the card base using Craft double sided glue tape. I left the inside blank to allow lots of room for a personalized message. I will probably add more cards inspired by Craft Roulette in the future. I encourage you to check it out on YouTube. It really is a lot of fun and it gets the creative juices flowing!
