Book Page Birthday

Hey everyone! This was such a fun card to make although it will probably make some people cringe. I love the look of old book pages used on cards, scrapbook pages, junk journals, etc., although some people really struggle with ripping a page out of a book. I bought a set of four Jane Austen books at a garage sale for the purpose of crafting with them. This card was made using a page out of Pride and Prejudice.

To start off with, I made an A2 card base (4 ¼ x 5 ½ inches) from Recollections 110lb white cardstock. I also cut a 4 x 5 ¼ inch card front from the same cardstock.

Next, I tore a page out of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I tore the edges so it would fit nicely on the card front, leaving a nice, little border around the edges. To give the book page more of a vintage look, I crumpled it up, giving it really nice crease lines all over. I then used Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Inks in both mermaid lagoon and ground espresso and added some ink to the page using domed foam blenders. I just randomly put the colors on with no pattern or plan.

I decided to add the mermaid lagoon ink to the edges of the card front to bring out the patch of the same ink in the book page. When I placed the book page onto the card front, I wasn’t really happy with the mermaid lagoon outline. It was just a bit too bright for the look I wanted. It’s important to remember that there are no mistakes in art, there are simply lessons. To achieve the look I wanted, I simply ink blended some ground espresso over top of the mermaid lagoon ink. I was very happy with the outcome.

I used Bearly Art glue to adhere the book page to the card front. Now to add media to the page. I looked through my stash of stickers and ephemera and found a beautiful clear sticker with a bird and a butterfly that have dark brown outlines and small bits of teal on them that is similar to the mermaid lagoon ink. I added it to the bottom left corner of the page. On the top right corner, I added a small bar with a heart in the middle that I had die cut from gold cardstock using the Technique Tuesday Decorative Dividers and my Gemini Jr. I decided that some beige twine would look great wrapped around the bottom of the card so I added a small bit of Craft double sided glue tape to the back of the card where the twine could attach. I wrapped the twin around several times.

For the sentiment I chose a happy birthday stamp from the Hero Arts A Little Bird stamp set. I die cut a small flower from white cardstock and stamped the sentiment in the middle of the flower using VersaFine Clair nocturne ink and heat set it using Recollections clear embossing powder. I used the mermaid lagoon ink and the blender to lightly color the sentiment flower and then I adhered it to the book page using Bearly Art glue.

The final step was to add the card front to the card base. When I placed it on the base it looked too bland with the white border, so I chose to add mermaid lagoon ink around the edges of the card base. It was the perfect border for the card front. I adhered the card front to the base using Bearly Art glue.

This card is so pretty and is definitely one of my favorites to date. I will be making good use of those Jane Austen books for sure!
